NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) is a collaborative satellite mission between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), aimed at creating highly detailed, time-resolved images of Earth to study its changing ecosystems, dynamic surfaces, and ice masses. Scheduled for launch in the near future, NISAR will utilize dual-frequency synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to monitor Earth’s land and ice-covered surfaces every 12 days over the course of its mission. This repetitive coverage will provide data on forest growth and biomass, ice sheet collapses, and natural hazards like earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. The mission is designed to enhance our understanding of the environmental impact of climate change and to support disaster management and resource conservation, offering crucial insights into the global carbon cycle and helping scientists in their efforts to forecast and mitigate natural disasters.
