Sunscreen is a topical product designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, reducing the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. There are two primary types of sunscreen: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation through a chemical reaction that dissipates the heat back off the skin, while physical (or mineral) sunscreens reflect and scatter UV radiation using active ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Sunscreens are rated by their Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which indicates how well the sunscreen can protect against UVB rays, the type primarily responsible for sunburn. Broad-spectrum sunscreens also protect against UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin and are more associated with aging and long-term skin damage. Regular application and reapplication of sunscreen are crucial, especially during prolonged outdoor activities, to maintain effective protection against the sun.
