The NASA Galileo Mission was a pioneering space exploration project that studied the planet Jupiter and its moons. Launched in 1989, Galileo was the first spacecraft to orbit Jupiter, arriving at the giant planet in 1995 after gravitational assist flybys of Venus and Earth. During its mission, Galileo made profound discoveries about Jupiter’s atmosphere, magnetic field, and the diverse characteristics of its moons, including the detection of a possible subsurface ocean beneath the icy crust of Europa, one of Jupiter’s largest moons. It also observed volcanic activity on Io, another of Jupiter’s moons, and provided detailed measurements of the Jovian atmosphere and magnetosphere. The mission significantly enhanced our understanding of the largest planet in the solar system and its environment. Galileo’s mission concluded in 2003 when it was deliberately sent into Jupiter’s atmosphere to avoid any potential contamination of the moons it had studied.
