A tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue that arises when cells grow and divide more rapidly than normal or when they do not die as they should. Tumors can be classified as benign or malignant. Benign tumors are non-cancerous growths that usually remain localized and do not spread to other parts of the body. They can often be removed surgically and are typically not life-threatening. Malignant tumors, on the other hand, are cancerous and have the potential to invade neighboring tissues and spread to distant body sites through a process called metastasis. The development of tumors is influenced by genetic mutations, environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and sometimes inherited genetic conditions. Detecting and diagnosing tumors typically involves imaging techniques, biopsies, and laboratory tests. Treatment options vary depending on the type and stage of the tumor and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. Research continues to advance our understanding of tumor biology and improve strategies for prevention, early detection, and treatment.
