Neanderthals and Homo sapiens shared technology and customs in the Levant, shaping early human culture through cooperation.

The first published study on Tinshemet Cave reveals that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens in the mid-Middle Paleolithic Levant not only lived side by side but also interacted closely. They shared tools, daily practices, and burial customs—evidence of meaningful cultural exchange.

These interactions encouraged social complexity and sparked behavioral innovations, including some of the earliest formal burials and the symbolic use of ochre for decoration. The findings suggest that collaboration, rather than isolation, played a key role in driving early human development. This positions the Levant as a vital crossroads in the story of human evolution.

Located in central Israel, Tinshemet Cave offers new insights into human relationships during the Middle Paleolithic period in the Near East. The site has yielded rich archaeological and anthropological evidence, including the first mid-middle Paleolithic burials discovered in over fifty years.

Published in Nature Human Behaviour, this is the first scientific report on Tinshemet Cave. It provides strong evidence that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens not only coexisted in the region but also shared elements of daily life, technology, and mortuary practices. These findings point to a deeper and more complex relationship between the two species than previously thought.

Investigating Human Relationships in the Levant

The excavation of Tinshemet Cave, led by Prof. Yossi Zaidner of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Prof. Israel Hershkovitz of Tel Aviv University, and Dr. Marion Prévost of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has been ongoing since 2017.

A primary goal of the research team is to determine the nature of Homo sapiens–Neanderthal relationships in the mid-Middle Palaeolithic Levant. Were they rivals competing for resources, peaceful neighbors, or even collaborators?

    Ochre Measurement

By integrating data from four key fields—stone tool production, hunting strategies, symbolic behavior, and social complexity—the study argues that different human groups, including Neanderthals, pre-Neanderthals, and Homo sapiens, engaged in meaningful interactions.

These exchanges facilitated knowledge transmission and led to the gradual cultural homogenization of populations. The research suggests that these interactions spurred social complexity and behavioral innovations.

For instance, formal burial customs began to appear around 110,000 years ago in Israel for the first time worldwide, likely as a result of intensified social interactions. A striking discovery at Tinshemet Cave is the extensive use of mineral pigments, particularly ochre, which may have been used for body decoration. This practice could have served to define social identities and distinctions among groups.

    Burial Practices and Symbolic Behavior

The clustering of human burials at Tinshemet Cave raises intriguing questions about its role in MP society. Could the site have functioned as a dedicated burial ground or even a cemetery? If so, this would suggest the presence of shared rituals and strong communal bonds. The placement of significant artifacts—such as stone tools, animal bones, and ochre chunks—within the burial pits may further indicate early beliefs in the afterlife.

Prof. Zaidner describes Israel as a “melting pot” where different human groups met, interacted, and evolved together. “Our data show that human connections and population interactions have been fundamental in driving cultural and technological innovations throughout history,” he explains.

Dr. Prévost highlights the unique geographic position of the region at the crossroads of human dispersals. “During the mid-MP, climatic improvements increased the region’s carrying capacity, leading to demographic expansion and intensified contact between different Homo taxa.”

Prof. Hershkovitz adds that the interconnectedness of lifestyles among various human groups in the Levant suggests deep relationships and shared adaptation strategies. “These findings paint a picture of dynamic interactions shaped by both cooperation and competition.”

The discoveries at Tinshemet Cave offer a fascinating glimpse into the social structures, symbolic behaviors, and daily lives of early human groups. They reveal a period of profound demographic and cultural transformations, shedding new light on the complex web of interactions that shaped our ancestors’ world. As excavations continue, Tinshemet Cave promises to provide even deeper insights into the origins of human society.

People will reject the research just like they reject the Holy Bible. If you read, you will know that the fallen angels matter with human woman. They created giants. Do you know the story David & Goliath? Goliath was from that DNA. Which created Nephilims from their DNA. Their offspring couldn’t stand the heat & traveled towards the mountains. Their offsprings were known as Neanderthals. Lost of pigments in their color were due to not having much sun. Some believe that those discovered living in the caucus mountains were of that DNA.

Angels are not married nor are they given to/in marriage. They are not meant to have children, they live forever so there is no need for angels to have children. Hence they do not share DNA. The Giants referred to in Scripture were of a race of giant humans

Literally, they stated the time period to which they were referring which wasn’t about the origins of any Homo tax but referring to the mid middle paleolithic levant 110,000 to 80,000 years ago! And more specifically the findings of a study of artifacts (archeological and anthropologic) which means bones and tools and how they can show behaviors and social interaction, development etc in a very specific cave in Israel! So your argument and take on the information are moot at Best and completely off base!

There are more recent studies, which may indicate that Neanderthal hunted Homo sapiens and cannibalized them. Human bones with butchering marks, and having been broken open to get to the marrow, found in Neanderthal living areas.

The oldest skeletons in the world are black Africans. This article is nonsense & misinformation. SCIENCE MAGAZINE HAS QUALIFIED SCIENTIST writing articles not Bigots. This is a junk science article. People who dislike like the truth being told about black Africans authored this article. Neanderthals lived in Europe & Asia. The black race is the only race that had the ability to change all races BACK TO BLACK because homo Sapiens originated in Africa, dominate genes. Black Africans muscles in the 💀 are different. This is why unethical nefarious experiments are being performed on black race people globally. What race wins the NYC marathon, what race dominate music, sports, athletics. If you want to understand man & the universe look within. All the information is stored in our subconscious & the superconscious and the Akashic Records. Science will never explain from artifacts the true origin of man. We all come from the 1/one. We are all of one spirit. Study Edgar Cayce’s Destiny of the Soul. Man has reached this level of technology we are at now and beyond many times and fell back. Edgar Cayce spoke of Pluto before it was ever discovered. Believe it or not it was called Vulcan. That can be verified. Science is great. It enlightens us and moves us forward to some degree, but in truth it is man’s pathetic attempt to explain his on existence and to try and understand why we are here.

How about what isn’t there? One chromosome pair, a big gap in the fossil record, or some sort of pre-sumer history, and no mention of the book of kings, or any indigenous oral-history. If you want to believe the bible is true, you have to also accept that the stories of other cultures are also based in reality.
Everything anyone believes about prehistory is still just the “best guess’s with the data available”s,” and subject to change with the next data point.
There’s gaps to fill in, and a lot of “splainin’ to do” before we start claiming ancestors

Fascinating archeological evidence, and a big dose of wishful thinking interpreting what it all means. Since we share Neanderthal DNA, for sure there was interbreeding among the 2 subspecies (I was taught Homo Sapien Sapien, vs Homo Sapien Neanderthalensis); and intercultural/technological mixing, but that doesn’t mean it took place peacefully. I wish it were so, then there would be hope for us.

Perhaps at times it did and other times it didn’t. When meat, other food, and water available, it’s likely they thought it a mutual advantage. If over generations, the groups developed a shared culture, interbreeding inevitable. After a generation, their culture saw interbreeding would increase likelihood of survival, it is possible over time in many in areas Neanderthals that didn’t die due to a weak immune system, slowly bread themselves out of existence

Every time I see a article about a discovery or finding “rewriting” history I laugh.

It just means the completely fabricated story you made previously, on assumptions, has now been proven wrong so you need to create another story.

Eventually that story gets proven wrong, rinse-repeat.

Round and round we go where its truth no one knows!

The issue most often is that when these people make discoveries they force fit that information into their own world view and then form a story off it.

Thats never going to lead to truth.

How long have you been on earth to not realize what a consensus or theory is? Nobody was there back then. All we have is data and remains to make the most logical explanation. It’s really not that hard to understand. By all means go excavate and find out the answers yourself, since you don’t think a single learned person out there who does this stuff, knows what they’re talking about or what they’re doing.

I’d love to hear your findings. I take ‘rewrite history’ more as hyperbole. It’s just a feeling or thought that an interested reader may have upon reading these findings, if they accurately contradict a finding from before. That’s the beauty of discovery and continued learning… right??

That is a matter of of opinion, and I happen to think it is the other way around: Trying to fill gaps in our knowledge by entering religion (meaning ANY of the deities people believe in) into science will undoubtedly twist it into something easily digestible by the believer.

Yes, but are we able to to finally make the leap to peaceful coexistence within our own species? Given the violation of international law, not to mention human decency, the zionist Israelis need to be stopped by the remaining 200 nations. The tail is wagging the dog with illegal USA assistance. torahjews.org are real Judaism. Herzl and Bibi zionists are the anti-Semitics. Arabs are historical sons of Abraham; it does not require an archeologist to figure out the bigotry of the conquering invading genocidists. I am Sephardic Jew and anticipating Likud murderous exclusion of all non-Ashkenazi Jews from Greater Israel. Or
can we make the quantum leap to elimination of human war. Let’s try by beginning with end of apartheid. Arabs and Ashkenazi DNA is not distinguishable. Fratricide is not acceptable.

The scientists have been brainwashed to believe that evolution is the truth of human origins. They are not allowed to think outside the carefully cultivated lies and made up theories. They discover the truth of the Bible every day but occupy themselves with ignoring their findings and displaying cracked pots, that they claim are millions of years old. They are as cracked as the pieces of pottery they unearth.

Then you have the issue of the meanings of words changing over time and deliberately messing with the books. There was no CORN in the Middle East at the time of Jesus. Cyrus of Persia was the messiah who allowed the Jews to return and rebuild the temple. It is clearly stated in the opening lines of Era.

      # Unveiling the Truth Behind Cave Men Paintings
For centuries, cave men paintings have been regarded as significant works of prehistoric art, offering a glimpse into the lives and cultures of our ancient ancestors. However, a fresh perspective suggests that these paintings may not be the profound masterpieces we once thought.

      A New Theory Emerges
Imagine a group of cave children, bored and restless, confined to the dark and damp walls of their cave. With no modern entertainment to speak of, they turn to the most readily available canvas – the cave walls. Armed with crude instruments and a vivid imagination, they set out to create.

      A Reflection of Everyday Life
The paintings that adorn the cave walls are not the sophisticated works of art we once believed. Instead, they are a simple reflection of the everyday lives of these cave children. They paint what they see – the animals that roam the surrounding landscape, the plants that grow in the nearby forests, and the people who live alongside them.

A Glimpse into the Minds of Cave Children
As we gaze upon these ancient paintings, we are offered a unique glimpse into the minds of these cave children. We see their curiosity, their creativity, and their sense of wonder. We are reminded that, despite the passage of time, the fundamental nature of childhood remains unchanged.

A New Appreciation for Cave Men Paintings
As we reconsider the origins of cave men paintings, we are left with a newfound appreciation for these ancient works of art. They are no longer the revered masterpieces of a bygone era, but rather a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of a group of bored cave children. And it is this simplicity, this innocence, that makes them truly special.

The bible was put together by mere men choosing which gospels to include &exclude in the 5th century AD and it reads just like the Egyptian book of the dead and is almost identical to many prior civilizations gods with a small difference here and there. Religion required faith since nothing can be proven with fact and anyone with common sense and critical thinking skills can see evolution and know science is the best theory or idea when considering all available info

First, stop saying our ancestors. Everyone does not have Neanderthal DNA. If you go in for evolution, then at most modern man and Neanderthals had a common ancestors or mating would have been impossible.
We may have had common ancestors but somewhere we separated. Then came back together. They died off we remained.

And to all the unstudied Bible thumpers. The scriptures are not always to be taken literally. Much of the Bible not all but much is alagorical symbols. Like the book of revelation. Also much of Genesis.

A belief that actions from the past often reveals a darker truth. Homosapeins likely didn’t work with their now extinct neighbors, it is more than likely that lesser developed humanoids were used a a slave force rather than equals, evidence suggest that the Neanderthal race was a “hard labor” force, however their fate was not extinction, rather the genetic line of Neanderthal was absorbed by the onslaught of modern peoples desire to dominate their lesser cousins. Rape, violence, and cruelty are likely the end of a race who, toward their end of their existence shows a dwindling and marginalized life. Their fossil record and what European science called absorbed into the rivers of human indulgences, cruelty and tendencies to dominate rather than harmonious living between a “dominate over inferior species”, it would be an egregious error to say the Caucasian race has always worked in harmony with negroid and other homosapian groups, time rarely changes the underlying truth we rarely face.

There is no evidence of slavery or racism in the finds related in the paper or elsewhere. That is late inventions as human populations started to increase.

There is no “Caucasian race”. “The Caucasian race (also Caucasoid,[a] Europid, or Europoid)[2] is an obsolete racial classification of humans based on a now-disproven theory of biological race.[3][4][5]”
