The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, commonly abbreviated as DESY, is one of the world’s leading particle accelerator centers and is located in Hamburg, Germany. Founded in 1959, DESY is a major research facility that operates various types of particle accelerators to investigate the structure of matter. It conducts a broad spectrum of inter-disciplinary scientific research, including particle and astroparticle physics, as well as condensed matter research. DESY is also noted for its cooperation with research institutions worldwide and is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. The facility supports a wide array of experiments in physics, from the study of fundamental particles and forces, to the development of new materials and the biological structure of molecules.
