New Immune System Defense Pathway Discovered
Researchers in Bonn have decoded the interaction between monocytes and platelets in human blood. Monocytes, a unique type of white blood cell, release cytokines as…
Immune cells, also known as leukocytes or white blood cells, are crucial components of the immune system that protect the body against infections, diseases, and foreign invaders. These cells originate from the bone marrow and circulate throughout the body, including in the blood and lymphatic system. There are several types of immune cells, each with specific functions: lymphocytes (including T cells and B cells) identify and remember pathogens; macrophages engulf and digest microbes and dead cells; neutrophils attack bacteria and fungi; and dendritic cells help activate lymphocytes. The coordinated actions of these cells provide the body’s primary defense mechanism against both external pathogens and internal threats, such as cancer cells. This complex network not only defends but also constantly learns and adapts, making the immune system highly effective over time.
