Zika Virus News

The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus first identified in Uganda in 1947, primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which are also responsible for spreading dengue and chikungunya viruses. While Zika infections are usually mild and characterized by symptoms such as fever, rash, conjunctivitis, and joint pain, the virus gained global attention during the 2015-2016 outbreak, particularly in Brazil, due to its association with severe birth defects such as microcephaly in newborns. This connection dramatically raised public health concerns about Zika’s impact on pregnant women and led to significant research efforts to understand and combat the virus, including the development of preventive measures like mosquito control and efforts toward vaccine development.
