    Weight Loss Scale Concept
Researchers discovered BHB-Phe, a body-produced compound regulating appetite and weight by activating neurons in the brain, with potential implications for obesity treatment. Unlike related compound Lac-Phe, BHB-Phe uses distinct neural mechanisms to influence feeding behavior and metabolism.

BHB-Phe, a newly discovered compound, reduces appetite and body weight by activating specific brain neurons.

Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, and their collaborators have identified a novel compound called BHB-Phe, which is naturally produced by the body. Published in the journal Cell, their findings reveal that BHB-Phe regulates appetite and body weight by interacting with neurons in the brain.

Until now, BHB has been known as a compound produced by the liver to be used as fuel. However, in recent years, scientists have found that BHB increases in the body after fasting or exercise, prompting interest in investigating potential beneficial applications in obesity and diabetes.

BHB-Phe and Its Role in Metabolism

In the current study, the team at Stanford University led by co-corresponding author Dr. Jonathan Z. Long, associate professor of pathology, discovered that BHB also participates in another metabolic pathway. In this case, an enzyme called CNDP2 joins BHB to amino acids. Furthermore, the most abundant BHB-amino acid, BHB-Phe, can influence body weight and metabolism in animal models.

The Baylor team, headed by co-corresponding author Dr. Yong Xu, professor of pediatrics – nutrition and associate director of basic sciences at the USDA/ARS Children’s Nutrition Research Center at Baylor, took on the task of investigating how BHB-Phe influences feeding behavior and body weight in mice.

Think of amino acids as letters in the alphabet of life. Just like letters form words, amino acids link together in chains to create proteins. These proteins are the “words” that shape how your body functions and grows.

“We know that groups of neurons in the brain regulate feeding behavior, so we mapped the entire brain to determine which areas were activated by BHB-Phe,” Xu said. “We found that BHB-Phe activates neural populations in the hypothalamus and brainstem, and this suppresses feeding and reduces body weight. In contrast, mice genetically modified to not produce CNDP2 and therefore lack BHB-Phe, ate more and gained weight.”

Interestingly, the CNDP2 enzyme that produces BHB-Phe also produces a related compound called Lac-Phe, previously discovered by the authors. Lac-Phe, the researchers reported in Nature, is a compound in the blood that is produced during exercise and can reduce food intake and obesity in mice. But do Lac-Phe and BHB-Phe mediate their common effects by activating the same neurons in the brain?

Imagine enzymes as the keys that unlock specific doors in your body. Each enzyme fits perfectly with a specific molecule, making essential chemical reactions happen quickly and efficiently.

Distinct Neural Pathways for BHB-Phe and Lac-Phe

“Our analyses showed that only a small proportion of neurons were activated by both compounds; most of the neurons activated by Lac-Phe and BHB-Phe were different,” Xu said. “This indicates the possibility that, although both compounds affect feeding behaviors in similar ways, they mediate this effect by different mechanisms.”

The findings suggest that the new pathway involving BHB-Phe, which is also present in people, could be disrupted in obesity and maybe other conditions, supporting the need for further studies to better understand the mechanism.

“This work opens up many new possibilities,” Long said. “For example, it might be possible for people in the future to consume BHB-Phe to drive weight loss without restricting carbohydrates in their diet.”

People are always looking for the easy way out. Just eat better, reduce portions, and exercise.

That’s great their is somethong being overlooked severly and that is the chemicals in food and liquid , citric acid this one is so bad it’s now added to everything , high fruitose corn syrup just these two trick the brain and blockbthe body from absorbing the nutrients. So we are staving and gaining weight at tje same time

YouDontKnowMeSoYouDontKnowJack, not all people are looking for the easy way out. It’s easy to say eat less and exercise, but that doesn’t always work. Different people, different issues. When your theory doesn’t work, people who actually want to be healthy will try anything. Don’t judge. Everyone has their struggles

Right? I have had thyroid issues all my life after parents ODd me on a steroid (used to be skinny and anemic).
Developed celiac and hashimotos disease and my heart cannot keep up with exercise because my metabolism just cannot make enough energy (MCADD, HFE gene) but moreso my joints get super inflamed so movement is more restricted. While I have movement restrictions I take T3 and other thermogenics to function basic through the day. Something like this would probably cut all the effort in between and help stabilize metabolism without excessive pills and maybe not causing arrhythmia whenever I pump a thermogenic or caffeine in the mornings to try to switch those mitochondria to work normally. I have to eat when even when I’m not hungry or face the consequences of extreme low energy. Calorie constriction did not work, carb and sugar constriction to fat/protein was working at first, but it developed into other complications and had surgery so I cannot digest fats anymore. Hence I’m at thermogenic pills to help prevent carbs being stored into fat due to faulty thyroid, failing pancreas and mitochondria. It’s a patch right now more than anything, so something better is/will be out there.
Something like what is proposed, may help both groups of regular and non regular functioning overweight/obese bodies.

I want to know more about this. I too have had battle with thyroid cancer, now no thyroid, on meds but my mitochondria may be impaired as I was just advised.

I agree weight loss is never a one size fits all issue. And I’m sorry yours in particular sounds so incredibly difficult. I truly feel terrible for what you have to go through each day to survive and hope one day a better answer comes along for you. In the meantime, people really do need to stop judging one another.

While that may be true for many people (any who cares, let them), there are many people suffering chronic illnesses that are unable to exercise and need other ways to lose weight. It may be a matter of life and death. Stop judging and let people live their own lives

Sometimes it’s not from eating the wrong food.Sometimes you gain weight because of health and things that happen to your body that keeps you from moving like you use to.Not everyone is heavy because they pack the food in.

If it’s natural occurring in the body, what happens (to the person’s body/ other organs) in the long term (5 to 15 years) if more is consumed?

The same should be thought of for the current weight loss drugs on the market.

A pill is all you need. the nature of Self awareness; Self control is what? A fiction of wives tales? Obesity is a self imposed reality of pointless existence redressed by insane instant gratification needs marketed to you by those who know your mind is an “uncontrollable impulse” now gratified because of your Obesity with an instant gratification pill. Starving populations are not prevalent to obesity and is that possibly another hint?

please everybody ignore the ignorant comments of ‘you don’t know me ‘ he’s obviously very inexperienced probably fairly young and understands almost nothing of an incredibly complicated issue
What I’ve learned over the last few years with my research is just how complicated biology is very few people have the remotest idea just to what extent its quite amazing to find out how the biochemistry is wildly varied the scientist s doing the research are not really much more than kids poking at things with sticks and the honest ones would admit it.
The idea that you can simplify it like this person thinks just shows how staggeringly unaware he or she is.
Especially when you through all these weird and wonderful chemicals we are swimming in to the mix,and there are many more in your food water air and bodies than most of you dream of making the whole process almost infinitely more complex to a billion processes that are already going on ,this is not an exaggeration
The idea that you can cure a complicated issue like obesity with a simple instruction like ‘eat less ‘ or some similar trite statement says nothing about the subject and all you need to know about the one leaving such remarks

I have had symptoms of low thyroid production for yrs. I continually asked for thyroid meds and my primary care said I didn’t need anything. Just by accident, when hospitalized for another reason, during the Nurse’s’s double checking your meds and health info. During my med list I was asked what meds I was taking for my thyroid and heart disease. The thyroid meds should have been the highest dose because my thyroid was completely atrofied. Also the heart disease was listed as a co-diagnosis of a non-functional thyroid. My liver is making thyroid hormones. This may cause liver problems. Already had my liver shut down and given a death sentence. The comment my primary said,” get your ducks in a row,”. My liver eventually over eight months turned back on. I will not survive another liver shut down. This is what a non working thyroid can do. I’m still fighting for treatment.

Science is a blessing. It helps to resolve or aid in mankind’s resilience and existence. Without science doctors would have nothing to solve our health problems. Those born with health problems or those who develop them don’t want them. We seek help from people who do vast research and development to aid us from our woes. If you don’t believe in science don’t pay attention to it and go about your life. Those who are thriving and interested in science read on!
